WHY MUSTARD OIL IS GOOD FOR HEART?

  1. Mustard oil has Saturated Fatty acid (SFA) as 7% (lowest one).  Low SFA is good for heart as high SFA may increase LDL, which is bad cholesterol and if oil has high SFA, it can lead to heart attack.  Mustard oil has lowest SFA, therefore, prevents heart attack.
  2. Mustard oil has Monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA) as 70% (highest one).
  3. The ratio of n-3 and n-6 is nearest to ideal ratio as recommended by W.H.O.
  4. According to Food Chemical Codex the limit of Palmitic acid should not exceed 6%.  The mustard oil has Palmitic acid as 3% which is within the limit whereas other oils have high level of Palmitic acid.  The sunflower oil has Palmitic acid as 7% and in Soyabean oil it is 11% and in Groundnut oil it is 11%.
  5. Trans fatty acids which produce during refining process of oil while heating the oil at very high temperature are present in all refined oil which are harmful to heart but mustard oil being the cold pressed oil does not have trans-fatty acid.  Therefore, mustard oil is good for heart.
  6. Mustard oil is rich source of Omega-3 (n-3) fatty acid which increases HDL ratio in the blood (as HDL is good cholesterol) help in avoiding heart attacks.
  7. Mustard oil also has the best ratio of SFA, MUFA and PUFA i.e. 1:2:1, which is also the recommended ratio of healthy oil by W.H.O.
  8. Mustard oil lowers Serum Cholesterol, LDL and Serum Triglycerides- which ultimately prevents artery damage.
  9. Mustard oil has ‘Vitamin E’ which is good anti-oxidant and has anti-ageing properties.
